I recently spoke with Diogo Dalot’s performance manager Mário Simões. Dalot was training with him at The Peak, a world class training facility (of whom Simões is the CEO) last week before returning to Manchester United. Here is a thread of everything that Simões told me:
“Diogo trained (with him) the last ten days before returning to Manchester United. He trained alongside some other players from FC Porto and two friends; also professional footballer.
“Diogo is an athlete beyond being a professional football player because he cares about everything that surrounds performance: not just training but sleep and nutrition also.
“We wanted to start the season better than ever. The plan also included a body composition improvement, even if he was already very good for the professional standards.
“In the performance side he is very powerful and we wanted to use this time to expose him to speed, agility and also endurance because we know how brutal this new period used to be. Better capacity means less risk of injury and more performance.
“The last two years were very good in those regards because he was available 100% of the days for training and playing and that is our main goal, especially with a player like Diogo who is ‘naturally’ strong and powerful.”
